On the eve of the World Environment Day 2016, Indian Development Foundation organised an awareness rally at Marina Beach, Chennai.
The theme for the World Environment Day 2016 is “Zero Tolerance for the illegal wildlife trade”. As per United Nation Environment Programme “ The booming illegal trade in wildlife products is eroding Earth's precious biodiversity, robbing us of our natural heritage and pushing whole species towards extinction.’
The rally was flagged off by Mr. D. Venkataraman, Director, Lighthouses & Lightships – Chennai, exhorted people to come forward and participate in the public event. “I am extremely happy to see young volunteers participating in social causes to protect the Mother Earth” he said.
“Stating that general public would be benefitted by such awareness campaigns, the young generation had a vital role to play in disseminating such eco- friendly information among the masses.
He thanked the Indian Development Foundation for organising the rally and involving the young volunteers for the environment awareness programmes.
Mr. S. Sreeram, Manager, Tamilnadu & Puducherry, IDF, stressed on the need to have people’s participation in protecting the environment. “The need of the hour is to create wide awareness of various environmental issues we are facing today” he added.
Students from Sri Shanthi Anand Vidyalaya, St. Raphel’s Girls’ Hr. Sec. School, Lady Sivasamy Ayyar Girls Hr. Sec. School, Kendriya Vidyalaya No 2, Madambakkam, Billroth Nursing College, CSI Rainy Nursing College, MMM Nursing College and many social activist also participated in the rally in the awareness rally holding placards conveying messages on environment protection.
