World TB Rally, Chennai

Indian Development Foundation organised a Tuberculosis Awareness rally on Monday to mark World TB Day 2014. Over 600 school and college students took part in the by the rally.

Students from four colleges and schools walked the three-kilometer stretch from the Light House to Labour Statue at Marina Beach holding placards with messages on the symptoms, care and treatment of tuberculosis.

“Tuberculosis is a curable disease and as students, it is our duty to spread the message and create awareness,” said Prerna Gupta, a class eight student from Sacred Heart Church Park.

Jenima, a class 10 student from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Tambaram, stated that 30 lakh people die across the world due to TB, with three lakh of them in India. “People die of TB because there is lack of awareness. During the rally, people asked us many doubts,” she said, standing along with her contingent of 32 students.

Even as the country awaits for the World Health Organisation to announce that India is polio-free, participants at the awareness rally felt that there has to be a collective effort to eradicate tuberculosis as well. “We have been successful in eradicating polio. 

TB is a common disease and we have come here to put in our effort towards eradicating TB,” said Anirudh, a class 11 student from Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Madras. 

M Narendra, CMD, Indian Overseas Bank, flagged off the rally. S Sreeram, manager, Indian Development Foundation, Tamil Nadu and Pondy was also present at the event.

IDF partners with ICFAI for Centre for Women Development, Hyderabad.

With an intention to bring about the advancement of women in three communities - rural, students and the employed the ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education inaugurated "The Centre for Women Development (CWD)" at its campus.  

C Suvarna, Special Commissioner (Watersheds), Government of Andhra Pradesh, who inaugurated the centre said that policies have theri own limitations and beyond that it is the initiatives by institutions like ICFAI that can educate, create awareness ad empower women across all strata of the country.

Guests of honour Vanitha Datla, Managing Director at Elico Healthcare Services and Sanjay Ram, Project Coordiantor of Indian Development Foundation, enlightened the audience J. Mahender Reddy, Vice - Chancellor of IFHE spoke.

Dhanraj Pillay Dreams of a TB free world

In a bit to spread awareness on the World TB Day, Goregaon-based Indian Development Foundation (IDF) designed and circulated a special poster featuring Olympian and hockey legend Dhanraj Pillay. The posters have been distributed to various educational institutions, public offices, corporate and social organisations in the city. 

The World TB Day was on Sunday, March 24. "We have printed a multilingual poster so that the message reaches more people," said Narayan Iyer, CEO, IDF. Pillay visited the IDF office located at Goregaon on Thursday.

"The awareness messages will certainly help to save several precious lives in the process. I am happy to be a part of the national programme," said Pillay.

IDF plans to open more than 400 Bal Gurukuls in two years

PANAJI, September 26, 2012

Indian Development Foundation (IDF), formerly Indian Leprosy Foundation, plans to increase its ‘Bal Gurukuls’ under its poor children’s elementary education programme scheme across the country from 93 to 500 in the next two years, said A.R.K. Pillai, president of IDF here on Tuesday. Mr. Pillai was addressing a gathering at an IDF award distribution function 2011-12 under Resource Generation for humanitarian causes at Don Bosco High School in the city.

Students and teachers of different schools such as Don Bosco High School, Red Rosary High School, Miramar, and Sharada Mandir, Miramar, were given awards for excellence in resource generation. Pradeep Korgaonkar, Chief Medical Officer, TB Control Programme, Uday Gaonkar, and Rajiv Phadke were present.

“In elementary education for the children of rag-pickers and similar neglected lot and stray children, we have found a method to remove this barrier by opening up ‘Education Programmes’ or ‘Bal Gurukuls’. From a beginning of five students in a tribal area of Karjat, IDF now covers over 6,000 students from Kanayakumari to Ladakh under this empowerment programme,” said Mr. Pillai.

IDF’s focus continues to be on health with 120 hospitals involved in the programme.

M. Karunagaran, District Collector, Coimbatore, inaugurated the new building of TB Ward at Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital at a programme organised to mark World Tuberculosis Day.

V. Subramani Raj, Consultant, World Health Organisation, awarded prizes to S. Sajma (first), Kendriya Vidyalaya Sulur, S. Dhanya(second), Shree Sowdeshwari Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, and S. Manikandan (third), Ruby Matriculation Higher Secondary School .

IDF Jaipur news in Times of India

IDFnext and Indian Development Foundation (formerly Indian Leprosy Foundation), Mumbai, a partner of Sarthak Manav Kushthashram, organized a rally and a street play "Kshaya ka Kshaya...Do Away With TB" on Saturday to create awareness on TB.

The rally kicked-off from Pink Square Mall and ended at Kachchi Basti, Jawahar Nagar. The event was supported by Prarambh Foundation, Shastri Nagar and Aadhaar Foundation, Jawahar Nagar. It started at 8.30am and lasted for two hours. Senior educationist, Renu Sharma put some light on the significance of such events.

The event saw participation of nearly 80 students from different schools and colleges.

By the means of street plays people were made aware of the causes, prevention and cure of the disease and were guided about the proper way of medication of TB. Many people promised to quit liquor and smoking while they watched the street play.

Kovid Oli, development executive of IDF, explained the strategies and objectives of the NGO. Aryaman Chetas Pandey, social ambassador of IDF spoke about the upcoming social events to be organized and Sandeep Edwin from Prarambh Foundation concluded the event.

Great moment at Sri Seshadri Matriculation School, Chennai

It was a great feeling to be part of the 40th Annual Day celebrations of Sri Seshadri Matriculation School, Chromepet, Chennai held on 4-2-12. IDF team comprising Dr.ARK Pillai, Dr. Narayan Iyer, Mr. S. Sreeram and Mr. K. Sathyamurthy participated in the event. Prof. Dr. B. Raja and Prof. Dr. S. Tamil Chelvi (Dept. of Tamil), University were the important guests who appreciated the schools contribution in academic and social excellence. The Correspondent of the School Mr. P. Such was the experience on Sunday, 15th May at Summer Fun-Gama 2011, an event organized by the social ambassadors and volunteers of Indian Development Foundation (IDF), an NGO that has been working for nearly three decades in the areas of health, education and rural development.

This mega event co-supported by Halliburton had a good turnout of hundreds of children from the age group of 5-16 years from different parts of Mumbai. Children thronged to Vivek Vidyalaya campus at Goregaon West, Mumbai on a Sunday morning to showcase their talents.
