His heart beats for the poor and the needy, the surgeon who did the first coronary bypass surgery in India, touching several thousands of hearts in over four decades.  Dr. K.M. Cherian’s name needs special mention in the history of cardiology in India.  Dr. K M Cherian is the only Indian whose name is engraved on the stones of Kos Island, Greece, the birth place of Hippocrates - the Father of Medicine.

“A lot is being done to improve the condition of patients and our nation is known for the best and timely care”, said Dr. Cherian as he emphasised on the cardiac care in India. “It is of utmost importance to see that the patients get timely and best of care, so that they can live a fruitful life spreading happiness”, observed Dr. Cherian, while receiving the  Mother  Teresa  Award 2017, from Dr. A.P. Jayaraman at a function organized by Indian Development Foundation, at Frontier Lifeline Hospital,  Chennai on 20th January 2018.

The septuagenarian, founder of Frontier Lifeline Hospital, Dr. K.M. Cherian expressed immense pleasure to receive an honour in the name of Mother Teresa, who set a sterling example for serving the sick and the needy. The efforts of Indian Development Foundation in enlisting people’s participation and support for national health and development programmes are noteworthy’ he added.

Dr. K.M. Cherian was conferred with the prestigious  Mother Teresa Memorial Award 2017 for his signal contributions to the advance of knowledge in cardiology and the welfare of humanity.

Chief Guest Dr. A. P. Jayaraman, Senior Nuclear Scientist from BARC paid glowing tributes to Dr.K.M. Cherian for his historic contributions to cardiac care in India. Dr. Cherian’s great initiatives will strengthen India’s efforts towards cardiac care and welfare of the patients.  Dr. Cherian’s glorious professional career has the rare spark of divinity igniting his tender loving care of humanity and human hearts. The Hand of God has actuated and activated the divine magic scalpel in his hand. His journey began from a Railway Hospital, when technology was not in place and all his accomplishments are the sure mark and seal of his uncanny technical skill, Dr. AP Jayaraman said.

The history of psychiatry in India will not be complete without mentioning Dr Sarada Menon’s contributions. One of India’s most distinguished specialists in psychiatry, Dr Sarada has been honoured with many awards including the Padmabhushan, four lifetime achievement awards and the recent Tamil Nadu Government’s Avvaiyar Award.

“A lot is being done to improve the condition of the patients, especially those living with the acute stage of illness”, said Dr. Sarada as she emphasised on the treatment of mentally ill in India. “It is of utmost importance to see that the patient’s mental state is restored to his or her original state, so that they can live a fruitful and normal life within their family and society”, observed Dr. Sarada Menon, while receiving the  Mother  Teresa  Award 2016 from Dr. M. S. Swaminathan  at a function organized by Indian Development Foundation at MSSRF, Taramani, Chennai on 25^th October 2016.

History of psychiatry in India cannot be written without hailing Dr Sarada Menon’s contributions. One of India’s most distinguished specialists in psychiatry, Dr Sarada has been honoured with many awards including the Padmabhushan and four lifetime achievement awards.

The latest honour is the Avvaiyar Award instituted by the Tamil Nadu government.

Born in Mangalore on 5 April 1923, Dr Sarada moved to Chennai when her father, a judge, was posted here. She finished MBBS in 1947 from Madras Medical College and completed training in Delhi and Andhra Pradesh. She joined the Madras Medical Service in 1951. Within a couple of years, she completed MD and in 1957, she completed a two-year specialisation course in psychiatry at NIMHANS, Bangalore, graduating as the first woman psychiatrist in India.

Dr Sarada served the Institute of Mental Health for 17 years where she introduced many reforms. She is also the founder of SCARF — Schizophrenia Care and Research Foundation in 1984 for the aftercare and rehabilitation of people with mental illness.

Indian Development Foundation (IDF) has chosen Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, Founder, Sulabh International for the prestigious Mother Teresa Memorial Award 2014 for his excellent contributions to India's sanitation, health and hygiene movement.  Recipient of Padma Bhushan and Stockholm Water Prize, Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak will receive the Mother Teresa Award on 27th Oct. 2014 at MSSR Foundation, Taramani, Chennai at 4:00 PM.

IDF Hails Dr, Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh International

Humanist and Social Reformer Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, Founder of Sulabh International appreciated the work of Indian Development Foundation. Dr. Narayan Iyer and Mr.Kovid Oli met Dr. Pathak at Sulabh International Office, Delhi on 18-07-2014. The team apprised Dr. Pathak on the national work of IDF. Team IDF congratulated Dr. Pathak for his exemplary national work. 

Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak is a great humanist and social reformer of contemporary India. To the weaker sections of society especially, his is the compassionate face of a paternal redeemer. He has the vision of a philosopher and the undying zeal of a missionary.  

Dr. Pathak will be remembered in history for his innovative strides in the field of sanitation as well as social reform. With his efforts erstwhile untouchables have been allowed by the society to intermingle with them and to live on par, dining with them and being allowed to offer prayers in the temples. 

Dr. Pathak has created a new culture which embraces the poor and extols the dignity of labour. He is an icon of sanitation and social reform who has made a difference in the lives of millions of people.

The epitome of compassion : Shiloh felicitates Dr. V. Shanta

When class XII student Shiloh Jessie Francisca was called to felicitate veteran oncologist and chairperson of Cancer Institute V. Shanta at a function on Friday, few had any idea what to expect.

Shiloh gave statistics of the number of tobacco users, about how it affected youngsters and provided details of the acreage under tobacco versus the land under paddy cultivation. She spoke of educating farmers and weaning them from tobacco cultivation to paddy and sugarcane. This, she said, would be the answer to eradicating tobacco-related cancers.

Shiloh's speech saw Dr. Shanta smiling and nodding in agreement. Shiloh is one of the thousands of social ambassadors for Indian Development Foundation (formerly Indian Leprosy Foundation).On Friday, the IDF honoured Dr. Shanta with the Mother Teresa Memorial Award 2013. The award, which included a statue of Mother Teresa, shawl and citation, was presented by M.S. Swaminathan, founder chairman of M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation. He said, "The Ramon Magsaysay [Award Foundation] recognised her for the compassion and humanism. Her presence is a source of inspiration and guidance," he said, comparing her to K.S. Sanjeevi, who started the Voluntary Health Services, with the aim of making health care affordable.

A.R.K. Pillai, founder of the IDF, while praising her humility and benevolence, offered the support of the Foundation's one million volunteers to create awareness about cancer and thus, prevent it.In her address, Dr. Shanta said Cancer Institute had launched a project to create a registry, even for rural areas. The thrust of Vision 2020 is cancer prevention because prevention is cure, she said. "We have seen a revolution in cancer care. But, significant advances in medicine have increased medicare cost, making quality care difficult. Oncology care is neither accessible nor equitable," she said.

Her concern was that non-specialists treat cancer without consultation with oncologists now. She said treating children with cancer made her happy as they would grow up and lead a normal life. Her only hope is to make medicare "affordable, accessible and equitable."

Kurai Ondrum Illai..... A musical tribute to Dr. V. Shanta by Neela Saraswathi Bal Gurukul Team. The team was led by Mrs. Sriranjani Ajay, IDF Social Ambassador.

Indian Development Foundation honoured Dr. V. Shanta with the Mother Teresa Memorial Award 2013. The award, which included a statue of Mother Teresa, shawl and citation, was presented by Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, Founder Chairman of M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation. He said, "The Ramon Magsaysay [Award Foundation] recognized her for the compassion and humanism. Her presence is a source of inspiration and guidance."

Indian Development Foundation (IDF) has chosen Dr. V. Shanta, Chairperson, Adyar Cancer Institute for the prestigious Mother Teresa Memorial Award 2013 for her excellent contributions in cancer research and care for over five decades. Recipient of Padma Bhushan and Magsaysay Award, Dr. Shanta will receive the Mother Teresa Award on 25th Oct. 2013 at MSSR Foundation, Taramani, Chennai at 4:00 PM. 

Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, father of the Green Revolution of India will present the honour. The award is instituted by Indian Development Foundation.
