India has 5.7 mn infected with AIDS

The only strategy seems to be prevention and control through appropriate education.

Ignorance, myths, and stigmatisation even almost three decades after AIDS was defined and the HIV virus isolated, remains the nemesis of the disease control programmes. In a country like India, socio-cultural barriers come in the way of containing its spread. From one case detected in 1986 the number of HIV infected has risen to 5.7 million making India the second largest population of infected people in the world today.........................

............................Peer education schemes can be started to address youngsters who are not into the formal education set-up. Only then can we aim to reverse the epidemic and nurture a healthy generation.
