Indian Development Foundation and students from Podar International School will jointly celebrate Holi Festival with the children of St. Catherine's Home at Andheri (W), Mumbai on 2nd March 2007 at 3:00 PM.

The students will gather at St. Catherine's Home, distribute sweets and eats to around 250 children and put-up wonderful skits on the theme `Holi'. Podar students will explain the meaning of the festival to the children of the Centre as they play Holi.

A festival of colour, love and happiness, Holi brings joy in every family. Holi festival gives us an opportunity to share happiness with the underprivileged in the society. Let us join hands and celebrate the colourful event in a different way.

An Evening in Podar

Podar World School celebrates An International Evening.

The students of Podar World School celebrated an `International Evening' on 23rd Feb. 07 at Podar Grounds in Santacruz, Mumbai. A colourful evening with full of life and energy was the evening at Podar World School. Each and every student of the School had a role to perform. There were several stalls of different countries and the young tiny tots were busy highlighting and promoting the panaromic beauty of the country.

A special stall for Indian Development Foundation was also nicely decorated inviting visitors attention. IBDP students consisting Mr. Raj Jobanputra, Mr. Kabir Verma, Miss Kalpana Jain, Miss Vidhi Shah and Miss Sneha Sundaram were the incharge for IDF stall. CAS Co-ordinators Dr. Anuradha Sridhar and Ms. Sarala Gavane took the lead to explain the students on social service activities of IDF. Beautiful charts, banners and posters on IDF activities were put up in the stall. The students explained the visiting parents on the activities of IDF with the help of films, slide-show presentation and display charts. The team had also designed a response sheet for getting the views of the visitors. Pamphlets and magazines of IDF were distributed creating awareness on leprosy.

The visitors of IDF stall included Consul Generals from different countries, the management members of Podar, parents, guests and of course the Director Mrs. Vandana Lulla. Everyone appreciated the work of IDF and congratulated the IBDP students who had shown keen interest in doing social work.

Those visited from IDF were - Dr. A.R.K. Pillai, President - Dr. Narayan B. Iyer, National Co-ordinator and Mr. Karthick S., Social Entrepreneur. IDF team congratulated Mr. Raj Jobanputra and his team for the wonderful social activity.

Kochon Prize 2007

Building on the successful experience of 2006, the Stop TB Partnership and the Kochon Foundation are pleased to announce nominations are open for the 2007 Stop TB Partnership Kochon Prize.

The Prize is awarded by the Stop TB Partnership Kochon Prize Selection Committee, on behalf of the Coordinating Board, to persons, institutions or organizations, which have made a major contribution to stopping tuberculosis.

Deadline and eligibility

Recognized national health bodies of WHO Member States, Stop TB partners and former recipients of the Prize are welcome to put forward nominations before March 24th, World TB Day, 2007. Nominees should have significant and documented achievements in the formulation and implementation of a system or policy for anti-tuberculosis programmes or in the fields of TB research, advocacy, education or training for the prevention of tuberculosis.

IDF honours Vivek College NSS Unit

National Service Scheme (NSS) students from Vivek College of Commerce, Goregaon (West), Mumbai had taken up IDF activities as one of their project during 2006-07.

NSS volunteers have performed extremely well in their social activities, apprised Prof. Thangadurai. Visiting leprosy home, talking to the patients, organising sale of greeting cards, mobilising resources from general public, participating in the World AIDS Rally and a host of other social service activities were performed by the students during the year 2006-07, he added.

Prof. P. Thangadurai, NSS Co-ordinator led the team and motivated them to do excellent social work. Prof. Sunil Mantri, Principal of Vivek College congratulated Prof. Thangadurai and all the NSS volunteers for their excellent performance and assured of continued support to IDF in the days to come.

Expressing special thanks to the NSS Unit of Vivek College, Dr. Narayan B. Iyer, National Co-ordinator, IDF presented IDF Certificate of Appreciation to Prof. Sunil Mantri and Prof. Thangadurai.

A New Eleven for BLP

BLP has a new Team

Bombay Leprosy Project, a pioneer NGO involved in research and treatment of Leprosy/ TB has a new team with Dr.V.V.Pai as the Director-cum-Secretary. Dr. R. Ganapati, the well-known Leprologist has relinquished his position on health grounds. The Managing Committee of BLP give the status of Director Emerits to Dr. Ganapati who will devlte his time to scientific research and advice on the affairs of Bombay Leprosy Project.

Dr. Vivek V. Pai, Additional Director of BLP till now, has over two decades of experience in research and management of leprosy and TB. He has a competent team of medical and para medical team as support base.

Dr.A.R.K.Pillai is the new President of BLP. Dr.S.S.Narvekar formerly the Additional Director of Health Services, Govt. of Maharashtra is the Vice President and Dr.N.G.Nagpur, Senior Dermatologist is the Treasurer.

The members include - Dr R.G. Valia, Mr A.P. Deshpande, Mr G.L. Govil, Mr Bharat Goyal, Dr V.H. Jadhav, Dr Dinesh Jain, Dr Aparna Santhanam

The new team is fully set to serve suffering humanity with enthusiasm.

Situated at Chunabhatti, Bombay Leprosy Project is one of the project of Indian Development Foundation dedicated to leprosy and TB patients in Mumbai.

IB Students join hands with IDF

IB students ties up with IDF projects for social service

The IB (International Baccalareaute) students of Podar International School, Santacruz under CAS programme (Creativity, Action and Service) tied up with Indian Development Foundation's projects for their social service activities. Indian Development Foundation (IDF) (formerly Indian Leprosy Foundation) is a leading national NGO committed to health, education and development.

CAS Co-ordinators Dr. Anuradha Sridhar and Ms. Sarala Gavane led a batch of 30 students to Vimala Dermatological Centre, a leprosy/ TB project of IDF at Yari Road, Versova in the early hours of Saturday (Feb.17). Dr. Anuradha said the IB Diploma Programme students have to undergo about 150 hours of social work in an year as per their curriculum and it is our privilege we are tied up with one of the national NGO like IDF for CAS programme. Visiting a leprosy home for the first time is a new experience altogether and the students are mentally prepared to do social service activities, Ms. Sarala Gavane added.

Dr. A. R. K. Pillai, President of IDF inaugurated the programme by giving brief details of the workings of IDF while Dr. Narayan B. Iyer, National Co-ordinator made a slide-show presentation on the scientific facts about leprosy. Leprosy is not hereditary, as a child borne to a leprosy patient may not have leprosy at the time of birth, he said. To a querry raised by one of the student whether leprosy is contagious, Dr. Iyer clarified by citing the example of the dedicated sisters and doctors treating the patients and a host of NGOs working for leprosy patients who are free from the disease. Dr. Iyer said leprosy is completely curable and treatment is given free of cost across the country.

Dr. C.N.N. Nair, Trustee-Secretary of IDF made three teams comprising ten students and named them as Red, Blue and White Group. Dr. Nair also highlighted on the importance of social work during student days. Dr. Sharad Nayampally, IDF Ambassador and a Yoga Therapist gave some useful Yoga tips to the students which they would teach the children in the centre during CAS hours.

The colourful team went round the male, female and children wards of Vimala Centre and they also had an insight of the out-patient-department where scores of people visit regularly and get treated. Gabs T-Shirts donated by SPL Limited, Faridabad were presented to every inmate of the Centre while toffees were given to the children. The teams felt happy as they went around each ward greeting the inmates a speedy recovery. One could see the glimpse of happiness on the faces of each patient as the students enquired about their well-being.

A host of social activities have been designed for each team to perform during the next couple of weeks. Counselling the patients, empowerment and guidance for the school going children, drawing, painting, music, sports and a host of other activities are listed on the social service cards for the students. Installing donation boxes, distribution of pamphlets and organising events for resource mobilisation for IDF will also be taken up by the students in the due course.

Students are the key for the transformation of the society, Dr. Pillai said. Bright things are seen as the students are enthused to do better for the society.

The students from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's D.R.A. Bhavan Vidyalaya, Chandigarh presented a handsome donation to Indian Development Foundation for health, education and development projects on Thursday the 15th of Feb.

Mrs. Meenakshi Mohindra, Principal of Bhavan Vidyalaya appreciated the work of IDF as she handed over the donation cheque to Dr. Narayan B. Iyer, National Co-ordinator, IDF in the morning assembly . Dr. Narayan Iyer addressed the students and expressed heartfelt thanks to the Principal, Vice-Principal, Teachers, Members of the Interact Club and the students for the kind and continued support to leprosy rehabilitation and TB programme of IDF.

Mrs. Manvinder Bajwa, Vice Principal of the School expressed her special greetings to the patients and children in various projects of IDF.

Teachers’ Incharge of Interact Club - Ms. Sonia Marwaha, Ms. Achint Kaur and Ms. Pooja Chawla did the motivation and co-ordination for resource mobilization. All our students are socially motivated and without any compulsion they have voluntarily contributed for the cause, the teachers remarked.

The students from Interact Club of Bhavan Vidyalaya instantly wrote a couple of beautiful messages for IDF which are given below.

StopTB Programme

The United Nations Secretary General's Special Envoy to Stop TB, former President of Portugal Jorge Sampaio, visited Geneva 29th-30th January 2007. He met with the Director General of the World Health Organization, Dr Margaret Chan, UNAIDS Executive Director, Dr Peter Piot, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr António Guterres, the Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Mr Markku Niskala, and other Stop TB Partners. Discussions were productive and included identification of specific next steps to move forward the agenda on TB control in light of several threats including the HIV-TB co-epidemic and extensively drug resistant TB ( XDR-TB). The Special Envoy was accompanied in his meetings by Director Stop TB Department Dr Mario Raviglione and Executive Secretary Stop TB Partnership Dr Marcos Espinal.

DAV Airoli supports IDF

The students from DAV Public School at Airoli in Navi Mumbai received vital health messages from the IDF team this morning.

Indian Development Foundation (IDF) has been organising various health awareness programmes in Schools and colleges disseminating facts on leprosy and Tuberculosis. It was the turn of DAV Public School at Airoli today as part of the ongoing anti-leprosy fortnight 2007 which commenced on 30th Jan.

Dr. A. R. K. Pillai, President, IDF addressed the students on scientific facts about leprosy. Any one, rich or poor, male or female and young or old, can get leprosy. Leprosy is not confined to poor alone, said Dr. Pillai. It is our duty to get ourselves informed on such diseases and IDF has been in the forefront creating mass awareness on leprosy and Tuberculosis. Early detection will help in early cure. Dr. Pillai said, both leprosy and TB are curable diseases, voluntary reportings and early treatments are the key to a healthy life, he added.

Dr. Narayan B. Iyer , National Co-ordinator of IDF replied to the volley of questions raised by enthusiastic students during the interactive session. Except for an animal found in South America by name Armidillo, only human beings get leprosy, was the reply given to Prathamesh's querry. There came a question from Sanjana, why then the doctors who are treating leprosy do not get leprosy. Dr. Iyer replied, leprosy is one of the least infectious diseases and patients under treatment cannot transmit the disease to others. Also leprosy is not hereditary i.e., a child born to a leprosy patient may not have leprosy at the time of birth.

DAV students identified themselves by expressing their wholehearted support to the national programmes undertaken IDF.

Mr. Rajeev Kumar Gupta, Principal of DAV Public School said his students are proactive in taking up social causes. It is the philosophy of DAV schools to prepare the students for a well rounded and positive attitude towards humanitarian causes. Mr.Gupta was all praise for the ongoing programmes of IDF and expressed his desire to participate in nation building activities within the time available. Only sustained efforts can bring in desired results and it is our need to develop India as fast as possible, Mr.Gupta added.

DAV Institutions' have been in the forefront of helping social programmes in India and joining hands with IDF will only strengthen the developmental efforts of our country, Mr. Gupta expressed with a smile.

DAV International School supports leprosy work

The concluding day of Anti-leprosy week which started on the martyrdom day of Mahatma Gandhiji i.e, 30th Jan. ended with a massive leprosy awareness programme arranged at DAV International School, Mulund, Mumbai.

Around 500 students from DAV School participated in the programme and got themselves updated on various scientific facts about leprosy. Curious children had lots of questions to ask. They could clear all their doubts during the interactive session.

Dr. A. R. K. Pillai, President, IDF and Dr. Narayan B. Iyer, National Co-ordinator, IDF spoke to the children on scientific facts on leprosy. Students were explained about the cause and cure of the disease. All patches on the skin may not be leprosy patches, only those with loss of sensation are the first sign and symptom of leprosy, said Dr. Pillai. Leprosy has been eliminated in India, thanks to the efforts put in by the government and various agencies. The signal contribution made by school students is stupendous, marked Dr. Pillai.

Dr. Narayan also talked to the tiny tots and helped in clearing all their questions. The children came forward and said that they are eager to participate in the national programme undertaken by IDF. They also assured of talking to their parents to lend support for noble cause.

Mrs. Rajeshwari Vishwanathan, Principal of DAV International School said that children need to be told about social values. Our children are more empathetic towards such social causes. They will be more happy to participate in IDF programmes. She said that she would like her students to visit orphanages and leprosy homes to widen their understanding of social issues. Once they are out of the school, they become more independent and I think school is the better platform for the children to learn social activities.

Mr. Avinash, the Physical Training Instructor of the school made arrangements for conducting the health education programme.

New Horizon students support leprosy work

New Horizon Public School supports anti-leprosy drive

3rd February 2007 saw a new horizon of hope for the poor leprosy-affected persons and children in orphanages when the students from `New Horizon Public School' in Airoli, Navi Mumbai came forward to lend their excellent support to Indian Development Foundation (formerly Indian Leprosy Foundation).

We always inculcate social values and awareness in the tender age which helps the children to understand the reality of society as they grow, expressed Mr. Nicholas Correa, Regional Head of New Horizon Public School. There was no compulsion of any sort, the entire New Horizon Schoolteam came forward voluntarily to give a thumping support to IDF.

A prestigious school in the Airoli area of Navi Mumbai responded to the social call of Indian Development Foundation and supported the programmes run by the Foundation. Every student took part in the national programme designed by IDF.

As part of World Anti-leprosy Week programme (30th Jan to 5th Feb), Dr. A. R. K. Pillai, President, IDF addressed the students of New Horizon Public School on scientific information on leprosy. Students have played an important role in the elimination of leprosy from India, expressed Dr. Pillai.

Mrs. Bulbul Sengupta, Principal of the School - Mrs. Jyoti Nair, Vice Principal (Secondary Section) and Mrs. Wilma D'souza, Vice Principal (Primary Section) joined Mr. Nicholas Correa, Regional Head of the Institution in presenting donation to Indian Development Foundation. Dr. A. R. K. Pillai, President of IDF expressed his heartfelt thanks to the schoolteam as he received the donation from New Horizon Schoolteam. Dr. Narayan B. Iyer, National Co-ordinator, IDF also thanked the management, teachers, students and their parents for their splendid societal support.

Master Viraj Mehta from Std. I has expressed `It is a very good cause and with this contribution lots of people will be treated soon and children can study well'.

Gandhi Peace Prize

It was most appropriate that the Gandhi Peace Prize 2005 was presented to Most Rev. Desmond Mpilo Tutu by the President of India for his invaluable contributions towards social and political transformation of South Africa and by contributing to World Peace. Rev Tutu had distinguished himself as a champion for human causes for several years and his contribution is spectacular. In 1978, Archbishop Tutu became the first Black General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches. This position provided a national platform to Archbishop Tutu for denouncing the apartheid system as "evil and unchristian." Tutu called for equal rights for all South Africans and a system of common education. He demanded the repeal of the oppressive passport laws, and an end to forced relocation. Archbishop Tutu encouraged nonviolent resistance to the apartheid regime, and advocated an economic boycott of the country. Later when he chaired a commission Archbishop Desmond Tutu counseled forgiveness and co-operation instead of revenge for past injustice. Here lies the greatness of this Titan. The life and work of Archbishop Desmond Tutu will remain an inspiration not only for the people of Africa but also people of other nations who are fighting for their genuine rights. By honouring Rev Tutu, we are honouring ourselves.
