Children's Academy supports IDF

Ms. H. Kachhawa, Principal, Children's Academy, Nirman Nagar, Jaipur has been a regular supporter of leprosy eradication programmes for several years now. World Population Day

Mahima Gehlot (XII E) from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Vidyashram, Jaipur presented a beautiful article to Dr. Narayan B. Iyer for publishing it in IDF's magazine `Joint Action' on the event of World Population Day (11/07/07). The article was read out in the assembly in the august presence of the Schoolteam this morning.

July 11 is observed as World Population Day. Our planet is now home to more than 6 billion people. With almost one-half of the world's population is under the age of 25, the choices people make today will impact our shared future. Worldwide increasing human population can contribute to the destruction of habitat and the depletion of irreplaceable natural resources. In many places, these trends further strap poverty-stricken communities, endanger the health of mothers and children and hinder economic progress.
One of every six people on earth is an adolescent. In the developing world, more than 40% of the population is under the age of 20.

The theme of this year's world population day is `One billion adolescent: the right to health, information and services', highlights the need to support young people in their efforts to lead safe, rewarding lives and contribute to the well-being of their families and communities.

UNFPA is focusing attention on adolescents around the world and the need for improved access to comprehensive reproductive health care services. It aims at prosperity of people around the world and is an essential element in building the foundation for an environmentally sustainable future.

Throughout the world, millions of girls and boys are deprived of education which in turn harms the individual prospects and those of society at large. In some countries, half of all girls are married before the age of 18, often resulting in early childbearing that poses serous health risks to both mother and child. Experience shows that educated women are more likely to marry later, and have healthy and better educated children, who will pass on these benefits from one generation to the next.

If the world is to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, essential interventions and involvement of youth is a must. It is they who can best identify their needs and who must help design the programmes that address them. The youth are the future, they also shape the future. Therefore, we must act now to both protect their health and well-being and to enable them to create a positive future for themselves.

IDF honours TN top student

Indian Development Foundation organised a special event to honour the student who scorred 2nd rank in Tamil Nadu in Standard X examinations held in March 2007. The event was held on 27th June 2007 in the School premises in Tirunelveli Dist.

Miss S. Jassima Sulaiha of Amali Girls Higher Secondary School at Cheranmadevi in Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu scorred the 2nd rank in TN state.

Mr. C. Chidambaram, Manager-Southern Region, IDF congratulated the student for scorring 489 marks out of 500. Jassima should be a role model for several other students. Despite several odds, Jassima took the challenge and reached the pinnacle, Mr. Chidambaram quoted with an appreciative note.

Excellent support from my Principal Rev. Sr. and encouragement from my teachers helped me to prepare for the exam in a systematic manner. I am grateful to God Almighty for bringing this laurel to me, expresed Jassima with a smile.

Rev. Sr. Principal appreciated the efforts of Jassima and congratulated her for achieving the 2nd position in TN state. It is really a creditable effort from her part and for bringing glory to her school.

Mr. S. Arumainayagam, Voluntary Officer of IDF also present in the presentation ceremony congratulated Jassima and wished for more success in her future career.

IDF team presented cash award and a couple of books of Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam to Jassima in the august assembly of students.

Jassima Sulaiha thanked IDF for the wonderful presentation and wished every success in its national efforts.


For readers information, Miss S. Akshaya from St. Mary's Girls Hr. Sec. School, Chengalpattu in Kancheepuram District, TN scorred the first rank in the state with 490 marks.

Indelible Impressions

Students from Podar International School (IB) visited Vimala Dermatological Centre, a leprosy home at north Mumbai as part of their CAS activities (Creativity, Action and Service) on 10th July 2007. VII standard PYP students formed the group for today's visit.

Earlier on 4th July students from III & IV standard and on 9th July students from V & VI standard visited the Centre as part of CAS activities.

Indian Development Foundation team welcomed the students to the Centre and showed them round the hospital. Students were given health awareness talk on leprosy, which helped them to clear their doubts on the disease.

Dr. A. R. K. Pillai, President of the Foundation talked to the students on scientific information on leprosy while Dr. Sharad Nayampally, IDF Ambassador gave an insight into social work and explained about IDF activities.

Mrs. Sarala Gavane, CAS Co-ordinator led the students to the Centre along with a couple of teachers from the School. Students raised several questions and cleared doubts as they listened to the talk. IDF team explained every point and motivated the students to participate in the national programme.

Vimala Children were invited to the hall and the students from Podar interacted with them. Podarites exchanged pleasantries and enthused Vimala children to study well.

The students left the venue fully informed of the topic and expressed their full participation and support for IDF activities.

07-07-07 Tales from Talegaon

Rambhau Parulekar Vidyaniketan at Talegaon, Dist. Pune in Maharashtra supports IDF work.

Mrs. S. P. Machnurkar, Principal of the School received Dr. A.R.K. Pillai and Dr. Narayan Iyer on the special day 07-07-07.

RPV is a regular supporter of leprosy and TB work carried out by IDF. The students of this school have participated in awareness programme and also mobilised resources for the underprivileged children under IDF's care.

The Principal has come forward to extend support to IDF this year too.

Mrs. Snehal D. Balsaraf and Mr. L. D. Kamble from the School joined the support programme of IDF.

Dr. Pillai thanked the School management and the Principal for the continued support to humanitarian programme. He also expressed his special thanks to the teachers, students and parents for their excellent help.

IDF's Empowerment Classes reaches a dozen

Indian Development Foundation recently added two more Empowerment Classes in Chennai making the total number of Empowerment programmes to twelve.

The two classes opened are as follows :

* Damien Bal Gurukul No.2, St. Anthony's Primary School, Velacherry, Chennai

* Thiruvalluvar Bal Gurukul No.2, St. Ann's Primary School, Royapuram, Chennai.

Students studying in these schools and in the nearby area will be benefited by this programme.

IDF is trying to reachout the underprivileged children and empower them towards better education.

Bright Future for IDF

Shri R. L. Sharma, Director, Bright Future Sr. Sec. School, Nirman Nagar, Jaipur visited IDF office on 25th June 2007. Shri Sharma and his Schoolteam are a great supporter of Indian Development Foundation for nearly 2 decades now. Shri Sharma met Dr. Pillai, Dr. Narayan and the entire IDF team during his Mumbai visit.


I congratulate Dr.Pillai and his team for the wonderful work carried out for poor leprosy patients, expressed Shri Sharma with a smile. I am happy to see the noble work of Dr.Pillai and feel proud to say that my students in Jaipur are supporting the right cause in national interest, Shri Sharma said.

Dr. Pillai thanked Shri Sharma Ji for his visit to IDF centre and conveyed his wishes to the Bright Future Schoolteam for the continued support.


Shri Sharma also visited Vimala Dermatological Centre, a leprosy project of IDF at north Mumbai and met the Sisters. He went round each ward, met the inmates of the Centre and also made a beautiful remark in the visitors diary. I am immensely happy to the work of Vimala Sisters and I wholeheartedly congratulate Rev. Sr. Bertilla and her team for doing God's work.

Educate a child. Enrich your life

IDF opens its 10th Empowerment Class at Nilakottai, Dindigul Dist, Tamil Nadu.

Damien Bal Gurukul is the latest Empowerment Programme of IDF in Nilakottai. IDF will work in collaboration with Damien Leprosy Control Centre, an NGO committed to the welfare of leprosy/ TB/ HIV-AIDS affected persons and also runs an Eye Care Centre.

IDF has been supporting DLCC for the welfare of poor leprosy patients for nearly two decades now.

Rev. Sr. Agnes Xavier, Director, DLCC has taken up the initiative to support IDF Gurukul programme in Nilakottai area which will benefit a number of poor children.

Damien Bal Gurukul will provide educational empowerment to the underprivileged children. Children who are regularly going to schools, but do not reach the required standards due to environmental imbalance are shortlisted and adopted in the Empowerment Classes. An hour or two, before or after the regular schooling, the children are given proper training/ coaching on various educational aspects.

IDF has been successful in establishing a couple of empowerment schools/ classes in different parts of India.
