NCC/NSS/Scouts/Guides, members of various housing colonies and educational institutions and industrialists and many social ambassadors have joined hands for spreading awareness on cleanliness. Special mention about Ingraham Institute from Ghaziabad, where over 6000 students have pledged their support for Clean India Movement. Mumbai University NSS volunteers from Bhavans College in Mumbai have performed special street plays with the theme on Clean India.......There will be series of event that will go on across the nation to spread the message of Cleanliness.

As part of IDF's iDiscover program to inculcate scientific temper in young minds, students from Holy Spirit School, St. Mathew's School, Sir J.R. School and Utkarsh Marathi School were taken to Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai on 19-01-2012. The day long program (10am to 5pm) kept the children busy updating various scientific information. Children were awestruck when their bus used Worli Sea-link and gave a wonderful view of the sea. iDiscover is the brain child of Wg. Cdr. S. Balasubramaniam Vr.C. , IDF social ambassador, which promotes to trigger scientific temper. Thanks to NSS volunteers from Vivek College who co-ordinated the entire trip in a scientific manner.

Tuberculosis, which kills around 1,000 people a day in India, has acquired a deadlier edge. A new entity—ominously called Totally Drug-Resistant TB (TDR-TB)—has been isolated in the fluid samples of 12 TB patients in the past three months alone at Hinduja Hospital at Mahim. The hospital’s laboratory has been certified by the World Health Organization

(WHO) to test TB patients for drug resistance.

While Iran first reported TDRTB cases three years ago, India seems to be only the second country to report this deadly form of the disease. TDR-TB is the result of the latest mutation of the bacilli after Multi-Drug-Resistant TB (MDR-TB) and Extremely Drug-Resistant TB (XDR-TB) were diagnozed earlier.

Even more worryingly for Mumbai, 10 of the 12 TDR-TB cases are from the city, while the other two are patients from Ratnagiri and UP. One of the 12 patients has since died. India sees around 3- 4 lakh deaths for all forms of TB each year, while the world saw 1.7 million deaths in 2009.

As the full form of TDR-TB suggests, none of the known TB combination drugs work on the patient. All 12 showed resistance to 12 drugs. “The TB bacilli have obviously mutated. The emergence of TDR-TB has grave implications for public health,’’ said Hinduja Hospital’s Dr Zarir Udwadia, whose observations have been published in the latest issue of the US-based Clinical Infectious Diseases (CID) peer review journal. His team started isolating TDR-TB cases among patients with pulmonary TB in October 2011.

Dr Amita Athawale, who heads KEM Hospital’s chest department, said TDR-TB was a reality in India. “The cases we clinically isolate are just the tip of the iceberg,’’ she said. TB is one of the biggest killers in India, along with heart attack.

Among tuberculosis patients, drug resistance develops mainly because patients fail to complete the 6- to 9-month first treatment phase. “They feel better within a couple of months of taking the drugs and so they stop taking them. However, the TB germs in the body are not completely vanquished and they again multiply,’’ said a senior BMC public health official.

Narayana Murthy receives Mother Teresa Award

Corporate leader and humanist Shri Narayana Murthy was conferred with Mother Teresa Memorial Award 2011 by Indian Development Foundation (IDF) at a function organized at NIMHANS in Bengaluru on 19^th December 2011. Shri Narayana Murthy received the honour for his relentless support in building a new India and excellent contributions in socio-economic development of the nation.

Shri Narayana Murthy praised IDF’s efforts to improve health care and education for the underprivileged children of this country through a novel scheme of Bal Gurukuls. The contributions of IDF in spearheading leprosy elimination and India’s development need to be appreciated by the people. Shri Murthy highlighted the social model adopted by IDF in translating socio-economic equality in the process of national development. He also stressed on the importance of self-reliance in managing national development programmes.

Prof. Pankaj Chandra, Director, IIM-Bangalore highlighted the importance on social-theme management among the emerging entrepreneurs and corporate bodies. Presenting the honour, Prof. Pankaj Chandra said Shri Murthy championed the need for social action to usher in an egalitarian society in India.

Dr. Satish Chandra, Director and Vice-Chancellor of NIMHANS congratulated Shri Narayana Murthy in setting a life example of uprightness and trusteeship concept as enunciated by Mahatma Gandhi. He complimented IDF for its unremitting work in the field of health, education and rural development.

Indian Development Foundation launched its 55th Bal Gurukul - HolySpirit Bal Gurukul in Malwani, Malad (W) Mumbai on 11.11.11.

November 11 being the National Education Day, Dr.A.R.K.Pillai, Rotarian Aunali Rupani, Rotarian Sana Rupani and Dr. Narayan B. Iyer spoke on the importance of education and the need for empowering the young minds. IDF has been in the process of establishing Bal Gurukuls in different parts of India and on National Edcuation Day IDF has announced 11 Bal Gurukuls to be launched and take the tally to 65 Bal Gurukuls. A step towards empowering the young minds.

Nov.11 happened to be the birthday of the Mr.Janardhanan, Principal of Holy Spirit English School and he felt very happy as he received the gift of education for his children. Principals from various schools in Malwani witnessed the event and congratulated the efforts of IDF. Children pledged to study very well and come up in life.

Dear Friends :

Greetings and good wishes from IDF !

Hope you all are doing fine. We wish you and everyone in the family a happy time.

First of all let me express our sincere thanks to you for supporting blanket mobilising drive for couple of years now. Blankets are required for the poor leprosy patients and those needy persons in leprosy colonies in northern parts of India and needy and elderly people living in hilly regions in the south of India. Our thanks to you for all your goodness.

The current situation

The winter has already set in some parts of northern region and hilly regions of India. As the days go by, the climate will get colder and colder. It will become very difficult for people, particular the those have-nots living in leprosy colonies and older people to bear the biting cold. It is always better to offer them blankets before hand so that they are protected.

We are confident that this year too we will receive good response from our friends. The more the support received by IDF, the more will be the beneficiaries and more will be blessings received by you and family.

Last year we could mobilise a good number of blankets for poor leprosy patients and underprivileged children under the care of IDF projects.

Our request

We have started receiving requests for blankets from different projects in northern India/ hilly regions in India. It is the time to show your love and warmth to the have-nots in the society. Let's do it now before it is too late. We need atleast 2000 blankets for this winter.

We would request people to come forward and donate blankets or cash for blankets. Donations may be sent to Indian Development Foundation (L 10/ 3 & 4 Jal Ratan Deep, Bangur Nagar, Goregan (W), Mumbai 400 104 - idfindia@gmail.com OR idfark@gmail.com). We will send a complete report of distribution. Cost per blanket is quoted as Rs.250/= per blanket.

As and when we receive the donation for blankets the same will be sent to project areas so that there is no wastage of time in transportation. The blankets are purchased locally and distributed. A meaningful meeting

Inaugurating the plantation drive organized at Jade Garden, Sadahalli, Bengaluru, Sri Ramachandra Gowda, Deputy Chairman, Karnataka State Planning Commission said that planting trees was no more for the pleasure of the eyes or for decoration but for our survival. He appreciated the efforts of Jade Garden Plot Owners Association (JGPOA), Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) and Indian Development Foundation (IDF) and stressed that such initiatives should be replicated in good members by the people from all walks of life. 700 plants at one go was planted at Jade Garden by IDF and SCB Social Champions on 22nd Oct. 2011.

Talking on the occasion, Dr. S. Franklin, Manager - Southern Region of IDF said that the Plantation Drive was a pan India program jointly organized in collaboration with Standard Chartered Bank. According to him the program aimed at impressing upon the urban elites towards creating greener cities across the country. He appreciated SCB team for spending useful resource for a green earth movement and involving its staff for the noble cause. He praised JGPOA for gracefully coming forward to allot a large space of its residential premises for the cause of green earth and a healthy environment.

Mr. A. G. Prakash, Principal of Sri. Ayappan High School, Jayamahal, Bengaluru lamented the gradual depletion of forests in India. Attributing the scenario to ignorance, he called for planting more number of trees towards good heath and well being of our people. He appreciated the wonderful humanitarian and nation building activities undertaken by IDF.
Neha, student of CMR Institute of Technology, Bengaluru talked on the importance of planting trees. IDF young social ambassador Karan Dravid (12), administered oath towards protecting the nature.

The Mother Teresa Memorial Award was presented to St. Francis Anglo Indian High School at a function held at Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan in Chennai on Wednesday. The award instituted by the Indian Development Foundation (IDF) is given to schools for excellence in social responsibility, health awareness programmes and mobilising voluntary resource.

The school bagged the award for its outstanding service in mobilising resources for TB and leprosy treatment. Rev. Sr. Alphonso, Principal, received the award from N. R. Murali, Deputy Commissioner, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. “India's progress in leprosy eradication efforts had been spectacular and the participatory work by governmental and voluntary agencies was laudable,” said Mr. Murali, who was the chief guest for the event.

He presented awards to the principals of 89 schools in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for their contributions in leprosy/ TB awareness programmes and resource mobilisation. He also awarded medals and certificates to 536 students for their meritorious achievement.

Dr. A.R.K. Pillai, founder president, IDF, presided over the function. IDF had earmarked grants of Rs.60 lakh to 120 health/ development projects all over India. Grants to leprosy/ TB hospitals and projects in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala regions were also distributed.

Ideal Bal Gurukul in Goa

The 51st Bal Gurukul of IDF - IDEAL BAL GURUKUL - was inaugurated at Goa on the 29th September 2011 in a simple and meaningful function. Holy Cross Institute, Quepem, Goa, run by Ideal Education Society, Goa partnered with IDF to serve the underprivileged children. Around 50 children will be benefiting from the program.

Dr. Uday C. Gaunker, Headmaster, Mrs. Yvette D'Silva, Asst. Headmistress and the teachers of the Bal Gurukul, Mrs. Rekha Nayak and Ms. Priyanka Desai from Holy Cross School were present. Mrs. Solly Mathew and Miss. Mischelle also participated in the event along with a few other teachers of the school.

Dr. Uday. C. Gaunker, Headmaster welcomed Dr. S. Franklin, talked on the purpose of the Bal Gurukul movement and appreciated the enthusiasm and commitment of the school team for the betterment of the children. Mr. C.A. Mathew enthused the children to perform well in their studies. Mrs. Yvette D' Silva appreciated the social concern and useful activities of IDF. Mrs. Priyanka Desai proposed vote of thanks. While interacting with the students, many of them said they either become teachers, doctors, engineers, police officers or pilots. IDF team wished them all the best. Most of the Bal Gurukul students hail from very poor background and poor in academics. The teachers expressed hope that the Bal Gurukul will help the students compete with the rest of the students and excel in their studies for a successful life ahead.

SCB-IDF Tree Plantation Drive in Mumbai

Indian Development Foundation(IDF) and Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) have been partners in tree planation and environment protection work across India.

On 24th September 2011 IDF and SCB Partnership opened up a triangular mega event of Tree Plantation Drive in Mumbai, Ghaziabad and Chennai by planting 3500 saplings.

Malad Forest Reserve, Mumbai – 1500 saplings
Ingraham Institute, Ghaziabad - 1000 saplings
Sivanthi Matriculation Hr. Sec. School, Chennai – 700 saplings.

A good number of volunteers drawn from SCB, IDF and social enthusiasts participated in each of these events.

Mr. Matthew Norris, Chief Information Officer – South Asia, Standard Chartered Bank highlighted the need for afforrestation efforts to gain ecological balance and better quality of life for the citizens. SCB has a pragmatic policy of encouraging tree plantations all over India and IDF partnership works well to gain wide coverage, he added.

Dr. Narayan B. Iyer, CEO, IDF and Wg.Cdr.S.Balasubramaniam, IDF Social Ambassador emphasised the need for popularising afforestation efforts all over India by enlisting the support of corporates and educational institutions. Planting of over 700 sandal tree saplings in Swaminarayan Gurukul International School in Hyderbad on Sept 17 marked the first major event in pan India operations on 17th Sept 2011. The last phase of the plantation will be organizing an event on 15th Oct. 2011 at Jade Garden, Sadahalli village in Bangalore where 1000 plants will be offered to the nature.

India’s progress in leprosy eradication efforts has been spectacular and the participatory work by governmental and voluntary agencies is laudable, observed Dr. Ganesh Raja in Mumbai on Wednesday. We are happy that the cherished dream of the Father of our nation for leprosy elimination has come true, he added. Dr. Ganesh Raja was speaking as the Chief Guest of Indian Development Foundation’s (IDF) Foundation Day Function at Master Dinanath Mangeshkar Hall on 14th September 2011. He gave away IDF Grants to leprosy/ TB hospitals and projects in western region. IDF has earmarked Grants totaling Rs.60 lakhs to 120 health/ development projects all over India during the year.

IDF Grants Release Function is an annual feature of Indian Development Foundation to share its resources with leprosy/ TB projects and promote self-reliance. The Chief Guest also presented Awards to 27 Principals of Schools in Western zone with star performance record of leprosy awareness programmes and resource mobilisation and awarded Medals and certificates to 122 students for their signal contribution.

Prestigious MOTHER TERESA MEMORIAL AWARD 2010-11 was presented to Podar International School, Santacruz (W), Mumbai for outstanding resource mobilisation for leprosy/ TB work in western zone. IDF SOCIAL ACTION AWARDS 2010-11 were presented to Principals and Teachers for their excellent Social Responsibility during 2010-11.

Indian Development Foundation (IDF) in collaboration with Varija Madhava Foundation (VMF) launched Varija Madhava Bal Gurukul for the benefit of the underprivileged children in Kurla East (Mumbai). Shri S. M. Hegde, Chairman, VMF and Dr. A.R.K.Pillai, President, IDF dedicated the Bal Gurukul for the children staying Kurla slums and announced it as a step towards providing `right education' and empowerment to the young minds. Dr.Ramandeep Sachdeva, Dr. Aneeta Nagpal and Dr. Narayan B. Iyer expressed their happiness to see good number of students turning up to avail the wonderful facility. Mr. Robert Karunakaran, Former Education Director of Coimbatore was inspired by the work of IDF in the area of providing education to the underprivileged students. He came forward to collaborate with IDF and start a Bal Gurukul in the memory of his mother.

Like IDF, there are thousands of NGOs working in the field of health, education and rural development. There are very BIG, big, MEDIUM, small to very SMALL organisations in every corner of this country. Many are waiting for an opportunity to affiliate and work for various causes. Let's come together, network and see that we start nailing the problems one by one. The power of ONE is really great. There is no dearth of resources in India - may it be human resource or monetary resource. People are ready to support humanitarian causes.

Every child in India should be educated. This should be our PRIME TASK. Despite of top social and corporate giants - we still find children on the street - either begging or rag-picking. Can we not better the situation and give them the dose of education ? Is it not our responsibility ? What are we waiting for ?

The team also created health awareness among the students with particular reference to Tuberculosis. Students from class X came forward to extend their whole-hearted support to the humanitarian programmes and also took the responsibility to spread TB awareness among their school-mates.
Appreciating the excellent work of IDF, Mrs. Seema Sabhlok, Principal of the school exhorted the students to participate in various social work programmes and bring smiles on the underprivileged children in various centre of IDF. As the announcement of visiting an orphanage was made by Mrs. Alka Arora, Co-ordinator of the school, the students were thrilled with enthusiasm. Sheryl Sudhakar, class X student said the visit will be an eye-opening for all of us and give us an opportunity to share joy and happiness with the little children in the centre.

The visit will mean a step towards strengthening empathy and enlarging the sense of responsibility towards the society, expressed the Principal of the school.

Talking to Dr. Narayan B. Iyer and Mr.Nehmiah Chirag Bacon, Dr. Shepherd expressed his happiness on the spread of IDF Bal Gurukuls in India, reaching out the have-nots. He also complimented IDF's role in TB awareness programmes across India.

Dr. Shepherd and Mrs. Sapna Shepherd initiated the idea of opening four more Bal Gurukuls in collaboration with Ingraham Institute in addition to the already existing Bal Gurukul at Asha Vidyalaya (for the hearing impaired). Of the proposed four Bal Gurukuls, one will be in Ghaziabad for the street children, the second will be in remote rural area and the other two in the UP state capital, Lucknow.

Dr. Narayan accepted the proposal and expressed IDF's fullest support in initiating such excellent education programmes.

Earlier, Dr. Narayan and Mr.Chirag addressed the morning assembly and created awareness on Tuberculosis. Dr. Narayan also held a special session on personality development for the students of class XI and empowered them towards brighter path.

Shade Bal Gurukul

IDF's SHADE BAL GURUKUL is run at Blue Birds School, Kavalabyrasandra, R T Nagar Post, Bangalore.

Shade Bal Gurukul was inaugurated in a simple manner in the evening hours of 7th July 2011.

Mr. Stephen, Director and Mr. Thomas, Additional Director of SHADE and Mrs. Zakia Khatoon, Secretary of Blue Bird School participated in the programme. Students from the nearby area have been selected for Bal Gurukul programme. Ms. Angel and Ms. Meena are the teachers for the Bal Gurukul.

Mr. Samuel Vincent Zonal Officer from IDF spoke about the concept of Bal Gurukul and IDF's goal in providing education to the underprivileged. Children felt very happy as they got enrolled into Shade Bal Gurukul.

Carmel Bal Gurukul and Shade Bal Gurukul got inaugurated in Bangalore during the first week of July making the total of 37 Bal Gurukuls in India. Indian Development Foundation aims at 100 Bal Gurukuls by 2015.

Mr. Thirugnanam, District Education Officer, Sankagiri, Salem was the Chief Guest for the TB awareness cum food and dress materials distribution function jointly organised by Indian Development Foundation and LRRC TB unit of St. Joseph's Hospital, Chettipati, at the Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Karupur (Tamil Nadu) on the 23rd of June, 2011.
Speaking on the occasion, he said the students should adapt to a healthy life style to prevent widely prevalent Tuberculosis. Unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical exercise and inadequate sleep were the contributory factors leading to poor resistance and succumbing to diseases like TB, he added.

Dr. K. Arunagiri, Joint Director of Health Services (i/c), Salem, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, appreciated Indian Development Foundation for reaching out to the student community with scientific information on Tuberculosis. He emphasised on the importance of regular and complete treatment towards preventing the spread of the Disease.
Dr. S. Franklin, Manager of IDF said that the students have great potential in disseminating scientific information on Tuberculosis and said that IDF will be reaching out to 10 million students for TB awareness during academic year 2011-12.
Dr. Anbu Selvam, Medical Officer of Karupur Primary Health Centre (PHC), said that Karupur PHC had so far (from 2003) treated 497 TB patients successfully and there was no doubt on the effectiveness of DOTs. Mr. Rajamanickam, Govt. Health Educator (Rtd.) spoke on the scientific information on Tuberculosis.
Fr. Johannes Gopu, Director of St. Joseph's Hospital, Chettipatti, Salem, presided over the function Food and dress materials for poor TB patients were distributed. Students who topped in the TB awareness contests were presented with prizes.

Indian Development Foundation (IDF) together with Standard Chartered Bank have been organising Environment related awareness programmes and clean-up campaigns across 10 major cities in India, starting World Environment Day.

The need of the hour is to create wide-spread awareness about various environmental issues we are facing today. World Environment Day at Bangalore

Leading NGOs and Corporates championing for social causes came together and organized various activities towards a cleaner and greener city of Bangalore on World Environment Day. The campaign was organized at Doddanna Nagar, one of the biggest slums of Bengaluru.

Master Karan Dravid, 11 years old Student Social Ambassador of Indian Development Foundation, kick started the campaign by administering an oath to a large gathering of slum dwellers, students, and volunteers. The oath was taken to plant more trees, conserve water and keep the houses and premises clean. Mr. A.G. Prakash, Principal of Sree Ayyappan Education Centre, lauded the initiatives and said that a clean environment was the basis for good health, happiness and prosperity. Mr. Rajiv Nair, Manager of Standard Chartered Bank expressed the bank’s resolve to partner with NGOs and reach out to several slums at Bangalore.

The activities included awareness generation, mass cleaning campaign, planting of trees and building fences for the saplings. Earlier an audio visual program on the conservation of water was organized by Ms. Kannika Iyer and Mr. Sudheendra from the bank.

Indian Development Foundation along with Standard Chartered Bank, SHADE and St. Martha’s Hospital had organized the program. Mr. Sampath Raj, the D.J. Halli Corporator, extended necessary support. Dr. S. Franklin, Mr. Kuppusamy, Master. Nischith, Mr. Stephen and Mr. Mathi spoke on the occasion. A mass clean-up drive was organized by Indian Development Foundation and Standard Chartered Bank on the eve of World Environment Day – 4th June 2011 at Ambedkar Colony, Elamma Banda, Kukatpally, Hyderabad.

Mr. M M Hussain, Mr. P. Sundar, Mr. G V S Kumar, Ms. Preethy and a batch of 60 Social Champions from Standard Chartered Bank participated in the event.

Mr. Sanjay Ram, IDF Social Ambassador, Ms. Manasi and Mr. Rao co-ordinated with Mr. Kareem (Director) and Ms. Lavanya (Secretary) of M S Foundation who work for slum development projects in Hyderabad.

The program started in the early morning time. People were divided into groups three groups. One group took up slum clean-up drive, the second one went for tree plantation in front of each house and the third took up awareness campaign and distribution of ‘Cotton Bags’ with message ‘Ban plastic and use cotton bags’. Children in the neighbouring areas participated in drawing competition with theme on Environment protection.

Captain (IN) Alokesh Sen, Principal, Birla Public School, Pilani (Rajasthan) and Mrs. Sen were the special invitees for the event.

Indian Development Foundation in collaboration with Standard Chartered Bank organised successful events across India on the eve of World Environment Day 2011 - (04-06-2011) :

1) Juhu Beach-clean up drive was a great success with good number of volunteers turning up to clean the beach. It was followed by a skit on Environment Protection by the IDF social ambassadors.

2) GREEN WALK from R Mall in Mulund to Dream Mall in Bhandup in Mumbai. Volunteers enthusiastically participated in the Green Walk carrying placards with messages on environment. The response was overwhelming and the team took part in street clean-up drive as they walked through the way.

It was a convergence of Social Ambassadors and Social Champions to promote social awakening on environment protection.

Such was the experience on Sunday, 15th May at Summer Fun-Gama 2011, an event organized by the social ambassadors and volunteers of Indian Development Foundation (IDF), an NGO that has been working for nearly three decades in the areas of health, education and rural development.

This mega event co-supported by Halliburton had a good turnout of hundreds of children from the age group of 5-16 years from different parts of Mumbai. Children thronged to Vivek Vidyalaya campus at Goregaon West, Mumbai on a Sunday morning to showcase their talents.

Indian Development Foundation (IDF) is organizing a `Summer Fun-Gama' onSunday the 15th May 2011 at Vivek Vidyalaya, Siddharth Nagar, Goregaon (West), Mumbai from 9 am to 3 pm. We are delighted to inform you all that this mega event is co-supported by Halliburton Volunteer Council (HVC) - India.

Since World Environment Day (05th June) is getting closer, the theme for the event will be related to environment and its protection. Children in the age group 5-16from different parts of Mumbai are invited to participate in `Summer Fun-Gama' and express their skills in Drawing, Singing, Quiz and Essay writing competitions. A special dance workshop is also arranged by Invigorate Xercise team for children from 10-16 years. Entry is FREE for all children.

Prarambh Bal Gurukul at Batta Basti, Near Shastri Nagar, Jaipur has 70 students who get benefit of education. IDF in collaboration with Prarambh Foundation run the Bal Gurukul for those children who need the most. Dr.A.R.K.Pillai and Dr. Narayan B. Iyer from IDF visited the Bal Gurukul and felt happy to see the progress. Congrats to Mr.Sandeep Edwin who is monitoring the Gurukul. Also special kudos to the teachers - Sheeba, Sonu and Asha - for imparting excellent education. Boxing champ and tennis star sign up to stop TB in India

24 March 2011 - Mumbai - The Indian Development Foundation (IDF) has secured the support of two of India's leading sports stars in the fight against tuberculosis (TB)

In the run up to World TB Day, tennis star Leander Paes and India's world women's boxing champion Mary Kom lent their support to IDFs awareness raising activities.

The two celebrities appeared in multilingual posters which were distributed across India, including at Dominos Pizza outlets. Leander Paes' message said "TB is curable....Let's smash it with DOTS" while Mary Kom's message said: "TB is curable ....Let's knock-out TB."

Mary Kom is a boxer from Manipur, India. A mother of two, she has won the World Boxing Championships five times and has been dubbed 'Magnificent Mary'.

Leander Paes is an Indian professional tennis player who currently features in the doubles events in the ATP tour and the Davis Cup tournament. He has won six doubles and six mixed doubles tennis grand slam titles and is now set to appear in his first Bollywood film

The endorsements were part of IDF's month-long TB awareness programme for World TB Day which started on 24 February.

Joy of Giving - A philanthropic wave by young minds

Warren Buffet and Bill Gates are very much in the news sharing mantras of philanthropy to the businessmen in India. However, young minds in NSN Mat. Hr. Sec. School, Chennai are no lesser than any great philanthropists in the country. The joy of giving by these young minds have in place for nearly 12 years now !

N.S.N Mat. Hr. Sec. School, Chitlapakkam, Chennai set a record of supporting deserving social causes continuously for the past 12 years. In a simple function organized at the school premises on 25th March 2011, Mrs. Chitra Prasad, the Correspondent of the school, presented donation cheques to Indian Developmental Foundation, Avvai Home and Orphange and Naam Foundation in support of outstanding service rendered for the welfare of less fortunate children. The donation presented was voluntarily mobilized by the students for various social causes as a part of their social responsibility program.

Mrs. Suhasini Mani Ratnam, renowned cine artist and the Founder of Naam Foundation was the Chief Guest for the function. She lauded the students for their sacrifice and selfless service towards reaching out to the needy. She said the children have done the right thing and the spirit of service should sustain.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Chitra Prasad, the Principal and Correspondent of the school said that while it was important for the students to be successful, it was equally important to be service minded. School life was the wonderful opportunity to develop the spirit of service, she observed.

Dr. S. Franklin, Manager Southern Region, Indian Development Foundation mentioned that the N.S.N. Mat. HS School, has set an excellent example of sharing and caring by supporting many needy causes for 12 consecutive years. Hats off to the young minds for generating such a philanthropic wave.

Ms. V. Susheela, Hon Secretary and Correspondent of Avvai Home and Orphanage thanked the students and the management profusely for the great support extended for the cause of educating underprivileged children.

Student representatives of the school took active part in the program. N.S.N. Mat. H.S.S. has the tradition of supporting social causes every year out of willing and voluntary contributions raised by the students. N.S.N school has an excellent track record of winning several state, regional and district ranks both in academics and extra-curricular activities. GREMALTES and Indian Development Foundation organised a health awareness talk for the workers of K.J. Fabrics in Chennai on 22nd March. About 50 workers from the unit were benefitted by the health awareness talk.

Mr. Sreenivasalu and Mr. Paul Calat were the Health Educators from GREMALTES while Mr. S. Sreeram, Zonal Officer, IDF addressed the women's group on the need to control the spread of TB. The women's group in K.J. Fabrics appreciated the health workers of both the NGOs for organising such a meaningful health awareness programme.

Holi with a difference

Podar International School visited St. Catherine's Home and celebrated Holi festival with a difference.

Instead of colors, Holi was played with colorful flower petals. Spreading the message of care and compassion, the visiting students also presented sweets.

Mrs. Sarala Gavane from Podar School - Rev. Sr. Louretta from St. Catherine and Dr. Sharad Nayampally from IDF co-ordinated the event on 18th March 2011. A social responsibility initiative of Indian Development Foundation.
